Acoustic neuroma

Acoustic neuroma, also known as vestibular schwannoma, is a type of benign (non-cancerous) tumor that affects the vestibulocochlear nerve, which is responsible for transmitting sound and balance information from the inner ear to the brain. The exact cause of acoustic neuroma is not well understood, but it is thought to be related to the growth of Schwann cells, which are a type of cell that forms the protective sheath around nerve fibers.

The symptoms of an acoustic neuroma can vary depending on the size and location of the tumor. Some of the most common symptoms include

• Hearing loss, usually in only one ear
• Tinnitus, which is a ringing or buzzing sound in the ear
• Dizziness or vertigo
• Balance problems
• Facial numbness or weakness

In some cases, the symptoms of acoustic neuroma may be mild and go unnoticed for a long time. As the tumor grows, the symptoms may become more severe and may include difficulty with swallowing, problems with coordination and balance, and changes in facial appearance.

Acoustic neuroma is typically treated with surgery, radiation therapy, or a combination of the two. The specific treatment approach will depend on factors such as the size and location of the tumor, the symptoms the patient is experiencing, and the patient's overall health.

Surgery is the most common treatment for acoustic neuroma. The goal of surgery is to remove the tumor and preserve as much of the healthy tissue as possible. There are several different surgical techniques that may be used, including microsurgery, which uses a microscope to remove the tumor, and stereotactic radiosurgery, which uses focused radiation to destroy the tumor.

Radiation therapy is another option for treating acoustic neuroma. This type of treatment uses high-energy rays to kill the tumor cells. It may be used alone or in combination with surgery.
